Introduction

Total War: SHOGUN 2 asks you to run two games at once: a turn-based map where food, taxes and diplomacy decide how many soldiers you can afford, and real-time battles where those soldiers either hold a line or fall apart. Most campaigns are lost long before the first battle, because a clan that overbuilds castles outruns its food surplus, or declares a war it cannot reach with the army it can currently pay for. The guides collected here walk through that whole loop in order: reading the map before you move, choosing an economy that supports an army, spending research on arts that unlock units you actually field, and preparing for the moment the map turns against you.

First Ten Turns

new

The opening that keeps a small clan alive past the turn the AI stops being polite.

FocusRead the province list before ordering a single move: find the one border you can hold and the rebel province that pays for itself without a war declaration.
Order of WorkFarm first, market second, walls last. Every castle tier consumes food, so an upgrade that outruns your surplus freezes growth across the whole domain.
Army ShapeFour to six yari ashigaru plus a general will hold a wall and police a province. Samurai come later, once a second province is paying tax.
Mistake to AvoidSigning a war you cannot walk to. Distance is a defence in this game, and an unreachable enemy still costs you trade and reputation.
S

Food, Taxes and Trade

Why the food bar, not the gold bar, is the number that decides how fast your clan grows.

Food FirstFood surplus caps castle growth everywhere. A stalled castle stops the build queue, so farms come before anything decorative.
Tax Trade-offRaising taxes on a province suppresses the growth you need later. Tax the rich province you are not developing instead.
Trade AgreementsEach agreement is income with no upkeep. Long-standing partners are also the cheapest border defence a small clan can buy.
SpecialisationTurn one province into a military recruitment hub and another into a market town rather than spreading upgrades thinly across the map.
A

Army Composition

Building a stack that beats samurai armies without paying samurai prices for every slot.

CoreYari ashigaru in spear wall absorb charges; katana samurai do the killing once the enemy is pinned.
RangedBow samurai win the ranged duel that decides morale before the lines ever meet. Bow ashigaru are a stopgap, not a plan.
FlankTwo units of yari or light cavalry on the far side of the enemy general turn a grinding fight into a rout.
ReserveKeep one melee unit uncommitted so a collapsed flank can be plugged without pulling troops out of the centre.
A

Realm Divide Preparation

The checklist to run before clan fame maxes out and the entire map stops being friendly.

TimingWatch the fame bar, not the turn counter. When it approaches the ceiling, stop expanding and start fortifying.
BordersEvery border province needs a garrison that can hold one turn alone. Ally-held flanks are worth more than one extra province.
TreasuryBank roughly a full season of income. Realm Divide costs you trade partners and therefore income at the worst moment.
VassalsA vassal buffer you created early stays loyal longer than an ally you bought late with a marriage you cannot repeat.

Core Mechanics

The guide layer follows the campaign loop rather than the menu structure. Turn one to ten is a survival problem: work out which provinces feed your first army and which border the AI will actually test. From turn ten onwards the problem becomes economic, because every castle upgrade consumes food and every new army adds upkeep that has to be paid from markets, farms and trade nodes. Once a second army exists the game becomes positional: siege capability, naval control of the sea lanes and agent intelligence decide which wars you can win quickly and which ones grind your treasury down. The final phase is the Realm Divide, where fame turns every surviving clan hostile and the only defence is preparation done thirty turns earlier. Each guide below addresses one of those phases and assumes you are playing the Complete Edition campaign on normal or hard difficulty.

Advantages

Guides are the cheapest way to stop losing campaigns to invisible systems. The food surplus rule, the tax growth penalty, the morale maths behind a spear wall and the exact moment Realm Divide triggers are all documented somewhere, but none of them are explained when they first hurt you. Reading them in order means your first campaign on a new clan starts from a working economy instead of a rescue operation. The roadmap also saves real time: knowing that research commitments lock you out of unit types for dozens of turns stops you from splitting the Mastery of the Arts tree and arriving at the decisive battles with nothing specialised. Finally, the guides are written around the Complete Edition, so the added minor clans, the mod browser and the rebuilt interface are covered rather than treated as unfamiliar additions.

Challenges & Weaknesses

Written guidance has limits in a game this variable. Clan start positions differ enough that advice which is correct for Oda in Owari can be actively harmful for Tokugawa, who begins as a vassal with a hostile overlord on the doorstep. Difficulty settings also change the maths, not just the AI: on legendary the campaign map penalties and the public order pressure make the relaxed early expansion described in beginner material much riskier. Battle advice is the most situational of all, because terrain, weather and reinforcement direction can invalidate a formation that works perfectly on open ground. Treat every guide here as a starting position to adapt, and check the clan and battle pages for the specifics that override the general rule.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do first in Total War: SHOGUN 2?+
Start by reading your own provinces before you move anything. Identify the food surplus you already have, the single border you can realistically defend, and any rebel-held province adjacent to you that can be taken without declaring war on a major clan. Then build a farm or market in every province that supports one, recruit four to six yari ashigaru, and commit your first research to one branch of the Mastery of the Arts tree. Moving an army before that groundwork is done is the most common way a first campaign collapses.
How do I stop rebellions and unrest?+
Unrest comes from three sources: a negative food surplus, religious difference, and recent conquest. Fix the food bar first, because a negative surplus damages public order everywhere at once. Then deal with religion, either by keeping conversion slow and deliberate or by leaving a garrison in a newly converted province until order recovers. Newly captured provinces should keep a small garrison for several turns, and a metsuke placed in a wealthy town both raises income and suppresses the unrest that taxation creates.
How long does a campaign take?+
A short campaign can be finished in a long evening, while a full domination campaign on a large map will run for many sessions. The turn count matters less than the phase you are in: the opening twenty turns are the slowest because every decision is permanent, the middle is a rhythm of building and fighting, and the last stretch after Realm Divide is a sequence of defensive battles you have either prepared for or not.
Which difficulty should a new player pick?+
Normal is the honest starting point. Hard adds meaningful AI aggression without changing the campaign economy underneath you, which makes it a reasonable second campaign once you understand food and public order. Very hard and legendary change the rules rather than the opponent: your economy is squeezed and public order is harder to hold, so they reward players who already know which provinces to develop and which wars to refuse.

Quick Tips

💡

Check the food bar before every castle upgrade, not after. A negative surplus does not just stop growth in the province you upgraded, it drags public order down across your whole domain and can trigger a rebellion in a region you have not garrisoned. If a farm is available anywhere in your territory, build it before you spend the same money on walls, temples or a market tier you cannot yet staff.

💡

Send your first agent out as a scout rather than an assassin. Knowing where the enemy's main army actually is changes what you build, where you garrison and whether you accept the battle at all, while killing a single general a few turns earlier rarely alters the strategic picture. Ninja scouting also reveals enemy siege preparations early enough to move a relief army into position.

💡

Commit to one half of the Mastery of the Arts tree for the first fifty turns. Bushido and Way of Chi each unlock units and buildings that the other path cannot reach, and splitting research leaves you with neither the samurai core nor the economy to pay for it. Decide based on your clan's signature unit and stay with it.

💡

Keep a written note of your alliances, marriages and vassals before Realm Divide. When fame maxes out, every surviving clan turns hostile except the ones you have bound by blood or vassalage, and knowing in advance which flanks will hold is the difference between a controlled retreat and a lost campaign.
